Aerfel is the capital and most populous city of Sarconia. Like most Sarconian cities, over half the city's population lives in Nuhe (Sarconian: "Cloth") districts. A style of housing unique to Doren, these consist of thousands of yurts densely pitched together, with residents sharing communal public facilities and infrastructure. Due to the desolation of the Second Continental War and relatively rapid development and rebuilding in the early 22nd century, Aerfel's modern skyline and architecture is sharply juxtaposed by sprawling plains of semi-permanent single family dwellings where the bulk of the populace resides.
Aerfel was the capital of the Combined Provinces of Doren and the United Doren Federation from 2080 to 2082 and 2135 to 2152 respectively.
The city has changed location more than a dozen times, most recently by 4km in 2083 after recoalescing in the aftermath of CW2.
Five kilometres from the city centre, the ruined Old City (covering several square kilometres) remains untouched since its destruction during the Shattering. It been declared a mass grave by the Sarconian State and is the largest such site on Kerbin. Surrounded by a short wall, it is closed at night and open only to small parties of visitors on weekdays.
History
During the Shattering Aerfel was struck directly by a Slow Bomb, igniting the plains to the east of the Sarconian Sea and destroying most permanent structures in the city. By the late stages of the conflict however, most residents had abandoned the capital and relocated their mobile homesteads and families across the Dorvic plains.
