Klensagrad is a coastal city in Sahr. It is the fourth most populous city in the nation. It serves as the headquarters for the Sahrina Aontina flot.
Etymology
The name comes from the Klens Peninsula it sits on. It is unknown exactly why it was named Klens but the leading theory is that Klens was an old Egercian word for maple tree. The town was originally named Klensthail but was renamed to Klensagrad after the War of the Egercias as a propaganda victory. Both names continue to be used but Klensagrad grows more and more dominant as a name than Klensthail every year.
History
Formation
The city was a local self governing outpost of trade from its founding to 2120. It officially fell under ownership of Kravsmad but had significant levels of autonomy.
Sahren acquisition
In 2123 the city peacefully surrendered to the Sahren Royal armed forces. By 2136 the Medrarian counteroffensive surrounded the city and street to street fighting ensued until the end of the war in 2134.
Klensthail was renamed to Klensagrad as a sign of Sahren domination in the region. The nation's first railways was created which would connect Dugthail to Klensagrad and it's associated manufacturing centres, which would later be known as the Klensagradina-Dugthailina Traen line. Klensagrad became the headquarters of the Sahrina Aontina flot in 2136 and soon the Klensagrad Stahlduga became the most important port in the country, as it was the only port which could construct the proper oceangoing vessels of the newly formed Sahren Navy.
In the interrum between the War of the Egercias and Sahren Civil War, Klensagrad grew significantly in population as the manufacturing jobs attracted workers.
Sahren Civil War
- Main Article: Sahren Civil War
Klensagrad was a hotbed of discussion of new economic theory leading up to the civil war, and when it began Klensagrad broke away as the Klensagrad Commune under the Labour party with a Syndicalist political system. Temporary war communism measures were undertaken until the city fell in 2146. The Klensagrad Commune broke away from the Labour party coalition in late 2145, though it did not declare open hostilities as both sides thought reconciliation could be possible.
Operation Tetraethyllead caused eleven days of constant fighting and destruction. Inititally the Republicans took measures to avoid damaging the city but were forced to leverage air support due to fierce Klensagradite resistance. A majority of historical buildings were destroyed during the battle. Important infrastructure like the road system, rail lines, and sewers were rendered unusable afterward and had to be rebuilt.
Reconstruction
Klensagrad was reintegrated into Sahr as soon as the operation ended and the soon disbanding Republican Militia were put to work rebuilding the city. Captured communists were sentenced to labour and used as a force to build vital infrastructure for several years before being released. During this process the left leaning part of the Republican coalition became intrigued with the possibility of rebuilding Klensagrad into a heavily planned city, which began with the election of
Five year plan
sometingsomething
From 2155 to 2185 soil excavated from the expanded plumbing network and metro system was strategically dumped just offshore on the south eastern coast of the Klens peninsula in the nation's largest land reclamation project to date. Several islands were produced and settled as a result, totalling a (area)km^2 expansion from pre-2155 area.
Forever peace
The hysteria of 2160 brought on a mass internal migration southward as the economy rapidly reorganized. Klensagrad was back to pre war standing as more from the north moved in.
Geography
Klensagrad sits on a peninsula surrounded on three sides by water.
Climate
The local Dugthail region is the easternmost stretch of the innacurately named Western Norian Steppe. The region recieves a significant amount of rainfall more than the deserts to it's south and serves as an important site for food production.
