JDF Model 2081- A1 ("M81A1")

The Joolian Defense Force is the local surface military of the core Joolian Federation colonies- namely, Laythe. As such, they are comprised of both native-born (and of multi-national heritage) Laythian/Joolian citizens and colonists more recently arrived from the constituent member states of the JF. As such, much of the JDF's hardware is indigenous to suit the unique climes of Laythe and the other colonized moons, and the M81A1 is no exception.

Development

In the late 2070s, as closer pushes for increased defense procurement arose in the JF due to fears over Kerbin-bound conflict spreading out into the system, a local tender went out on Laythe for a domestically-produced service rifle to issue to JDF militiamen and front-line security personnel.

Such a weapon was to be an intermediate caliber rifle, with a long barrel, moderate weight, and reliable function. It also needed to be easily serviceable and not be a derivative of any existing weapons platform; it would need to be a truly Laythe-born weapon.

Following a months-long selection process, a firm local to the JF capitol on Laythe won the bid, and thus the contract.

As the rifle entered service in 2081, it was designated as such. The "A1" version of the weapon featured several minor changes in order to meet updated standards upon full production commencing.

Design

The M81A1 is a bullpup, long-barreled assault rifle in 6.8x43mm SPC, firing at a balanced 750 RPM to maintain accuracy in automatic fire.

Its action is a unique adaption of several existing concepts around balanced-recoil principles and mixing delayed-blowback, gas piston, and direct impingement operating mechanisms to produce a truly unique gas system to cycle the bolt- as such, it's relatively simple to clean and maintain while retaining a high degree of accuracy.

In order to retain ease of procurement, the lower rear receiver is modified from an existing civilian sporting carbine produced on Laythe, but merely as a clever re-use of tooling already available. The weapon's components forward of the stock area are all-new and custom-designed.
