Azure Riband

The Azure Riband is an unnoficial acolade given to the passenger Flying-Boat crossing the Aontan sea in regular service with the record highest average speed. The term is borrowed from horse racing, with the colour green being replaced with azure to match the Tekkian flag. The record is based on average speed because different routes have different travel times.

Background

The first crossing of the Aontan sea by plane took 26 minutes and 30 seconds. Similar flights were of similar time until improvements in engine technology drastically sped up the transit over the next century. Although the term Azure riband wouldn't be used, the practice of measuring average speeds of flights as they crossed the sea was already beginning. The competition fell out of favour after jet engines and rocket engines were first tested on aircraft, only returning in 2116 as strictly a propellor powered seaplane award. Progress stagnated until harbourization of Sahr led to a sharp increase of flying boats in service.
