Design and Development
As the Atreus Aerospace Command began to understand its inevitable expansion both in size and scope, the AASC Admiralty began to see a need for dedicated Fuel Ships to ensure large battlegroups and capital ships could continue on long-duration missions while maintaining the use of chemical rockets.
The initial project was opened for development shortly after the AASC's official creation in 2190, seeing multiple bids but seeing the final contract awarded to Odyssey Aerospace Aeronautical Design Office in 2192, with construction of the first ship starting the same year.
The oiler features 4 replenishment stations, with two on each side with one being capable of refueling smaller ships such as the Raven-Class, and Sentinel-Class ships, the two other refueling stations are capable of refueling larger ships such as the Retribution-Class and Swordsman-Class vessels and also serves as a cargo hatch for non-liquid cargo.
Additionally to its liquid cargo, the front section of the Adelmar V. Herwig-Class serves as a cargo section as well as additional crew accommodations. Additionally, the ship can be converted to a container ship with little modification similar to the civilian cargo ship variant.
Namesakes
The Adelmar V. Herwig-Class is named after notable figures, as well as persons who have achieved great accomplishments and honors as a homage to them. The first ship, AASV Adelmar V. Herwig is named after former Atreus Aerospace Command Fleet Admiral, Adelmar V. Herwig being named after him as he was the first to take the office of Fleet Admiral of the AASC in 2190.
The second ship of the class, the AASV Gismund R. Franko is named after Lieutenant Gismund R. Franko, who was the first commissioned officer not transferred from the Atreus Air Force in 2191.
Finally, the third ship of the Adelmar V. Herwig, the AASV Isa B. Aldwin gets her namesake from Senior Petty Officer Isa B. Aldwin, who similar to Lieutenant Franko, was the first enlisted member of the AASC to graduate basic training in 2191.
