The Orion Empire, also known as Orion, is an empire that spans the continents of Veiid, Doren, Kafrica and Caledon. It is one of currently three nations that make up the Imperial Union, and contains its capital. While still rather new on the global stage the empire is a prosperous and powerful nation that has access to every ocean on Kerbin. The Orion Empire also is in possession of multiple space colonies, including dominion over Minmus, Duna, and Ike.

Provinces/Geography

Due to the large number of territories under the rule of the Empire, there have to be a few classifications. The two classifications for Orion territories are dominions and colonies.

A dominion has representation proportional to its population in the Imperial parliament and is granted greater autonomy as well as its own regional parliament to make its own decisions. Orion Dominions also have their own dedicated regional defense forces.

Colonies on the other hand are directly ruled from Primus Orania without representation in the parliament. Colonial territories have a governor appointed directly by the emperor for more local administration and are defended by the primary Orion/Imperial military.

This is the capital of the Empire, more commonly known by the name of the island, Soltem. The sole city on its surface is the largest in the empire, heavily dependent on imports, and home to the emperor in the imperial palace.

A millenia ago, the nation-state of Fidelis was founded. With the western border at a large river and the eastern border in the north of the Kolus sea, the nation was somewhat isolated, but retained the ability to communicate with the outside world. The Fidelsian people believed in the power of the moon and the stars, which were assumed to be representations of their deities.

As the centuries moved forward, there was a split in the nation between the Eastern and western populations. The eastern part of the country had the most population, the capital city, and the religious centres. The west was somewhat more disconnected from the central government and were their own people centred around the river. This split became more and more pronounced as the years went on. Eventually, the western part of the nation started to question the religion that had dominated the country for centuries and started using mathematics and physics to determine what was going on in the sky. Perhaps not gods, but objects they thought.

However, since this was a huge perversion against the state, it was kept secret. More and more west Fidelsians learned mathematics, early physics, and astronomy. However, in the year 1900 KP2 time, the east found out about what the west had been up to. As a result of this, the first Fidelsian civil war started. The western portion of the country knew that the east possessed the military power and the army, so they decided to fight a guerilla campaign in the highlands and mountains while concentrating the population around the city of Llundain, on the western frontier of the country. The war went on for several years as the east pushed forward in its crusade making ground but suffering massive casualties. Eventually, the west had lost half of their territory but the east had a casualty rate 3 times higher so a ceasefire was called. The two parts rejoined back under one flag to avoid further conflict. However, the deep ideological differences remained and grew even further apart.

The west was the first part of the nation to industrialize as it was generally far more educated in practical skills such as engineering, physics, math, etc. The east struggled with its industrialization with many accidents taking place and even enlisting the help of the west through the years. The western portion of the nation was also the first to experiment with aircraft and rocketry, creating the first powered aircraft as well as launching the first rockets into suborbital trajectories. At this point, the theocracy in the east was becoming unstable as the leadership saw their grip on power slipping as the population became more educated and more inquisitive, starting to question the divine right of the “Faithful One”. As a result, the east began to crack down further on civil liberties and created kangaroo courts where any dissenters would be tried for treason and thrown in prison or executed.

Fidelis/Orion Civil War

The government kept cracking down until the 2060s when the west of the nation had enough once and for all. At this point, the east had amassed a large army and the west was once again outnumbered. The west of the country had prepared for this moment. Throughout the past 80 years, dozens of launch sites, launch vehicles and more were being made under the guise of infrastructure projects. The east launched a full invasion of the west no matter the losses. The army, completely brainwashed by the leadership and 100% blindly loyal. The west knew that they could not win this war and that they could not survive. International intervention was non-existent due to the larger ongoing issues during the period such as the collapse of the Arcadian union starting the Aesarian civil war, the collapse of Sanctum, and the beginning of the Delras civil war. Fidelis had always been rather isolationist and far from any strategic geographic locations so it was not deemed worthy to intervene.

As the war commenced, the west of the country, now christened Orion, tried to hold on via using guerrilla tactics in the mountains. However the more powerful and numerous Fidelis forces moved closer and closer to civilian centres.

There was a bloody fight for Prometheus where thousands died in just a few days on both sides. While the Orion soldiers were able to use resources far more efficiently and had better performing weapons, the Fidelsians had superior battle tactics and were far more experienced in combat. The Orion forces were pushed back to Flint where final preparations were being made all over Orion for the escape. The current king of Orion, Augustus gave an address to everyone who followed him. “My friends, today we stand prepared to start a new life for ourselves. We have stood in austerity and under the thumb of Fidelis for far too long. However, we will not be able to beat them. I don’t doubt all of your abilities to fight and die for this cause and this country, but then there will be nothing left for the future generations, only to be either left for slaughter or enslavement from the tyrannical Fidelsians. We knew this was a strong possibility since the beginning, especially with Fidelsian spies finding out our technology and ways to counter it. Instead, I have made the executive decision to attempt to escape. All over your cities, you will see rockets prepared for liftoff that will take us to Minmus, impossible to reach for Fidelis. This is our only shot, only chance at survival. I, along with other brave Orion soldiers and pilots will be holding the line against the Fidelsian army in order to allow all of you a chance at a better life. Godspeed to you all, it has been an honour to serve you.”.

Rumbling was heard as warehouses and factories collapsed to reveal hundreds of massive launch vehicles prepared for liftoff. Civilians were able to board in about a day as the Orion military gave everything left to holding back the Fidelis army and air force. Takeoffs began during the night and went on through the day. Over 1 million were able to migrate to Minmus in time. The conflict came to an end in the year 2062. When the survivors got to Minmus to set up their new home, the first act was raising the Orion flag, and christening themselves as the OSF
