Shive, (/ʃɪːv(e)/; Namjjog: /ʃɪv/, or /ŋɪv/), officially the Most Serene Republic of Shive, is the smallest nation on Kerbin by area. A city-state and republic, it is situated on East Kolus along the Western Norian Steppe by the Sea of Aontas with Neo-Mechani and Azuria to its immediate north and Mydrilan to the west. The majority spoken language is Namjjog. The country's territory comprises of the Walled City of Shive and the entirety of the Shiven Isthmus.

Inhabited by early Kolun Kerbals since at least 22,500 BCE, its proximity to the sea and access to fresh water has permitted its continued inhabitancy by the late Proto-Mechani peoples and the modern Samagi.

As a city, Shive's trade and extensive naval and later aerial history through the Sea of Aontas has influenced its maritime culture.

Shive is a developed country with emphasis on maritime commerce; it is heavily reliant on its state and civil fleet for defense and trade. Since the collapse of Mechani, it has established its third consular republic and became a protectorate of the Veiidic Commonwealth.

Etymology

The country of Shive is named after the Shive River south of the nation, making the name a misnomer. The Shive River's name, in turn, is presumed to originate from the mid-antiquity war cry "시부", shouted by early hunter-gatherers on the Western Norian Steppe.

History

Prehistory

Kerbal inhabitance has existed early as 22,500 BCE, during the Paleolithic. Comprising of migrations from the Western Norian Steppe, the Proto-Mechani developed a sedentary and agrarian lifestyle, sustaining off a pescatarian diet of maize, shrimp, and Aontan and Kolusian fish. Early Shiven dwellings were composed of baked soil and later animal hide. The first extinctions in the area, most notably the Aontan decapods and the erasure of most species of maize have been attributed to Kerbal expansion. With the deficit in sources of food, the Samag peoples would look west of the steppe, resulting in the Shiven Isthmus being vastly underpopulated compared to other civilizations around the Aontan and Kolusian Seas.

The Shiven inhabitants are suspected to have practiced religion, with many communities bearing remnants of religious structures. Archaeological evidence has supported the idea that rituals of the like were conducted regularly and were often communal.

Jidae feudal period

Beginning in late antiquity, the Jidae Dynasty administered coastal regions of the Western Norian Steppe, including both Shiven and Henshian Isthmuses. Shive saw one of the first cases of feudalism, with decentralized systems of agriculture and fishing. Coastal cities, such as Shive and Henshi, would see strong trade relations with Kafrican merchants, establishing the first diplomatic relations between Kolus and Kafrica. Many vassals laid along the west coast of the Kolusian Sea, united only by personal unions or similar economic interests.

Many privateers of the Jidae fleet suffered from insufficient pay and poor leadership after the coronation of Yejo. A lack of enforcement within the ranks led to captains resorting to other measures, such as pillaging nearby ports. Because the Jidae Dynasty bore no diplomatic missions nor representatives, these crimes were often committed without punishment.

O Jun-yeo, a Shokonese naval prodigy and writer, would petition the local courts to increase pay for sailors and privateers alike, however, was under the threat of being charged with treason, and would shortly thereafter live in brief hiding, fleeing to Shive later.

In Shive, O, through falsified papers, would gain control of a ship-of-the-line, undertaking small skirmishes with enemy fleets. O's tactical prowess would improve his standing among the Kolusian fleets, leading to his pardon in 1681. O would also establish informal alliances among captains, resulting in independent cohorts in battle and nautical duties.

Among the maritime community, the Main Act of 1683 was most unpopular. This act lowered pay and scuttled ships so the lumber would be repurposed for the expansion of residential areas; in turn, made captains seek piracy as a more economic option.

Tensions would heighten when O's ship, the Guul, docked at a Henshian port on 29 February 1684. O was ordered to surrender his ship for it to be dismantled. O refused, purposely delaying messages to the administrative offices near the port in order to make for time to load all 62 guns and pull out of the dock. During the evening, the Henshian authorities would first hear of the planned insurrection, and immediately order the artillery to fire. Far out of port, did the Guul hear the first shots.

First republic

Piracy

Under O, Shive saw a dramatic increase in naval production, constructing a fleet heavily based on Kafrican designs. Feudalism was effectively brought to an end with O enforcing absolute control over Shive. While initially constructing merchant ships, the production of ships of the line would begin to enforce Shiven naval supremacy over reluctant merchants, later turning Shive into a sea-faring pirate republic.

O first saw combat in the Fire of Henshi, where for 72 hours, Shiven ships bombarded the ports of Henshi and residential areas with incendiary munitions, starting a fire that lasted for four days, destroying 60% of the city's residential and industrial centres, where O is alleged to have spent three sleepless nights cycling his ships and leading the logistical supply line to maintain the sustained fire.

O was killed on June 2, 1707 during the Siege of Bá in modern day Solaria when his ship, the I Taek-so, ran aground and was hit in the magazine by Kafrican coastal batteries, obliterating the hull and sinking two nearby gunboats. The fleet would subsequently leave the city, later ravaged by a tropical storm on its return. O was posthumously revered as a savior; his legacy being one of legend, with his birth and death later becoming major holidays in Shive, as well as Fort on East Point being renamed in his honor.

Second republic

Following O's death, infighting and mutinies within the fleet led to its dissolution and the effective collapse of Shiven society. Captain of the People, Ji Heun-ge, would rally the College of Counts into the unification of Shive, Henshi, and Shokon into the foundation of a second, strictly consular republican government.

After a three month voting intermission, Ji would ascend to the Consul of Shive, being the only council to assume both titles of Captain of the People and the consulship.

Although the second republic also allowed for the ascension for a second consul, Ji would serve his first term with the second seat vacant.

The period during and after Ji's consulship would see a period of relative stability and peace; most policies in this period were created to establish Shive as a respectable and conventional power on Kolus. This peace however, was created by a heavy isolationist policy, Shive often traded with Kafrican powers through Henshian trading companies, with
