Prehistory
Kerbal inhabitance has existed early as 22,500 BCE, during the Paleolithic. Comprising of migrations from the Western Norian Steppe, the Proto-Mechani developed a sedentary and agrarian lifestyle, sustaining off a pescatarian diet of maize, shrimp, and Aontan and Kolusian fish. Early Shiven dwellings were composed of baked soil and later animal hide. The first extinctions in the area, most notably the Aontan decapods and the erasure of most species of maize have been attributed to Kerbal expansion. With the deficit in sources of food, the Samag peoples would look west of the steppe, resulting in the Shiven Isthmus being vastly underpopulated compared to other civilizations around the Aontan and Kolusian Seas.

Kerbal inhabitance in Kolus began relatively late: circa. 200 CE, after the Axial Age. Comprising of migrations from the Western Norian Steppe, the Root-Burric developed a sedentary and agrarian lifestyle, sustaining off a pescatarian diet of maize, shrimp, and Aontan and Kolusian fish. Early Shiven dwellings were composed of baked soil and later animal hide. The first extinctions in the area, most notably the Aontan decapods and the erasure of most species of maize have been attributed to Kerbal expansion. Nomadic in nature, the population gradually shifted east and became what would be the modern Samagi and later Aviennic, inhabiting Shive.

The Shiven inhabitants are suspected to have practiced religion, with many communities bearing remnants of religious structures. Archaeological evidence has supported the idea that rituals of the like were conducted regularly and were often communal.

Samagi migration
The first written mention of Shive was by east Kafrican pioneer, Bertholdt Kerr.

  +
The modern Samagi descend from the Mambic and Norian peoples; migrating across central Kolus over the course of four centuries. The Samagi ultimately trace their lineage from Root-Burric cultures, who were nomadic in nature due to the climate of the steppe. Their descendants, the Reposian, Mechani, and Aviennic cultures would become sedentary as they settled near the coast.

Jidae feudal period
Feudal dynasties
  +
The Western Norian Steppe would be home to many civilizations. One of the first major dynasties was the Old Mechani. According to tradition, the city of Mecan (presumed to be east of modern day Orisse) was founded by an archer of the same name in the 5th century. However, the modern consensus was that Mecan became one of the first sedentary settlements west of the Mamb River Valley, and it gradually grew over the course of three hundred years.
Beginning in late antiquity, the Jidae Dynasty administered coastal regions of the Western Norian Steppe, including both Shiven and Henshian Isthmuses. Shive saw one of the first cases of feudalism, with decentralized systems of agriculture and fishing. Coastal cities, such as Shive and Henshi, would see strong trade relations with Kafrican merchants, establishing the first diplomatic relations between Kolus and Kafrica. Many vassals laid along the west coast of the Kolusian Sea, united only by personal unions or similar economic interests.

  +
Shive was the southernmost of the Mechani's possessions. At the time, it is estimated it had a population of around 12,000.
During the 1500s, the spread of maritime travel introduced many ideas to the Kolusian Seas. The new ideas, including republicanism, would expose the flaws of what was considered an outdated form of government, being the decentralized feudal system of the Jidae. Even compared to other hierarchal systems of the time, the lack of a professional or even present military force as well as mismanagement of resources made the Samagi seek the need for change as well as a rise in political philosophy.

  +
From the 7th century onwards, the Mechani developed a policy of isolationism, making modern accounts unreliable. The Mechani's rule ended somewhere in the 9th century, with the Avienne shattered into city-states and minor feudal states, such as Shive, which was conglomerated into Shokon.
By 1601, Shive would become a port city, opening its docks to nations across the world for the first time. The spread of international trade also elevated the Jidae diplomatically, now that resources could be exchanged. During this time, naval manufacturing would become a popular industry in Shive.

Norian communities began trading again in the 10th century. The next few centuries would see the rise of maritime commerce in Shive.

Historically, maritime transportation was considered a form of art very sacred to Shive. The rule of the law was often inspired by its naval counterparts.
Many privateers of the Jidae fleet suffered from insufficient pay and poor leadership after the coronation of Yejo. A lack of enforcement within the ranks led to captains resorting to other measures, such as pillaging nearby ports. Because the Jidae Dynasty bore little diplomatic missions nor representatives, these crimes were often committed without punishment.

Piracy
O Jun-yeo, a Shokonese naval prodigy and writer, would petition the local courts to increase pay for sailors and privateers alike, however, was under the threat of being charged with treason, and would shortly thereafter live in brief hiding, later fleeing to Shive.

Mechani annexation
In 10 April 1684, Yejo died. His expected successor, Hijo, would die five days later, leading to his brother, Nejong, to assume the throne. Nejong was deeply unpopular among the Shiven maritime community and the upper class. Collaborating with various secret societies, did they create a plot to at the very least, overthrow Nejong, or ultimately, introduce a better suited government body.

Tensions heightened between the Avienne and Mecani populations in the Mechani Union. Various political parties, such as the ADP and BAW, had widespread Avienne and Reposian support in the south of Mechani.
First republic
  +
The ADP would fund and lead the foundation of the Avienne Student Movement (ASM).
Piracy
With the more aggressive policy of O's republic, came the reintroduction of piracy. Piracy however, was not only a tactic, but was a strict military doctrine.

Under O, Shive saw a dramatic increase in naval production, constructing a fleet heavily based on Kafrican designs. Feudalism was effectively brought to an end with O enforcing absolute control over Shive. While initially constructing merchant ships, the production of ships of the line would begin to enforce Shiven naval supremacy over reluctant merchants, later turning Shive into a sea-faring pirate republic.

O first saw combat in the Fire of Henshi, where for 72 hours, Shiven ships bombarded the ports of Henshi and residential areas with incendiary munitions, starting a fire that lasted for four days, destroying 60% of the city's residential and industrial centres, where O is alleged to have spent three sleepless nights cycling his ships and leading the logistical supply line to maintain the sustained fire.

The Battle of Shokon saw the siege of ASM forces in the city of Shokon, a redoubt in the Shokon Perimeter. The siege lasted five months from the spring to summer of 2149, during which, the Shiven Perimeter was established.
O was killed on June 2, 1707 during the Siege of Bá in modern day Solaria when his ship, the I Taek-so, ran aground and was hit in the magazine by Kafrican coastal batteries, obliterating the hull and sinking two nearby gunboats. The fleet would subsequently leave the city, later ravaged by a tropical storm on its return. O was posthumously revered as a savior; his legacy being one of legend, with his birth and death later becoming major holidays in Shive, as well as Fort on East Point being renamed in his honor.

Scourge Day
  +
The Shokon Nuclear Power Plant was initially avoided by both sides. However, during the spring of 2150, reactor 3 of the plant melted down in an event named "Scourge Day;" this followed months of mismanagement during the winter of the previous year. Contrary to the name, the meltdown caused months of crop failure. The spring winds would carry contaminated material northeast, halting the advance of government forces in the steppe and forcing their retreat to Orisse and Laberi in Orisse canton.
Following O's death, infighting and mutinies within the fleet led to its dissolution and the effective collapse of Shiven society. Captain of the People, Ji Heun-ge, would rally the College of Counts into the unification of Shive, Henshi, and Shokon into the foundation of a second, strictly consular republican government.

  +
Exodus to Shive
After a three month voting intermission, Ji would ascend to the Consul of Shive, being the only council to assume both titles of Captain of the People and the consulship.

  +
The Mechani's supply lines were now weakened, enabling the two ASM divisions in Shokon to break out in August of 2150. There, the remaining ASM forces and the ADP's supporters retreated to the Shiven Perimeter, where government forces did not pursue. A provisional government was established in Shive. Immediately after its establishment, a ceasefire was negotiated in order to contain and secure the Shokon Plant. The cleanup, headed by Mechani authorities, lasted two years.

Third republic
Although the second republic also allowed for the ascension for a second consul, Ji would serve his first term with the second seat vacant.

Fourth republic
The period during and after Ji's consulship would see a period of relative stability and peace; most policies in this period were created to establish Shive as a respectable and conventional power on Kolus. This peace however, was created by a heavy isolationist policy, Shive often traded with Kafrican powers through Henshian trading companies, with the Henshian armadas providing protection from Kolusian pirates. The O Faith Patrist movement would also reemerge in the 19th century, nearly two centuries after his death.

  +
Contemporary history
The Consuls of 1891 would attempt to implement sweeping modernization through the promotion of steam and rail, however, this worsened relations with the West Norian tribes, with railway projects often being postponed due to tribal sabotage and ambushes.

The third republic came after the fall of the Mechani Union in 2152. A mostly bloodless revolution, the third republic was founded with no military and a strict neutrality policy.

However, under threats from across the strait, the neutrality policy would be greatly loosened, with Shive seeking foreign protection. In 2199, with Shive's growing economy and international trading prowess as a bustling port city in the Kolusian and Aontan Seas, the Consuls of Shive would apply for protection in the newly-found Pan-Veiidic Commonwealth. Legally, it was considered an extension of the Cross-Oceanic Treaty of Friendship in 1702 between the first republic and a confederation of Patrist tribes in modern day Atreus, Desovo, and Novenad.

Shive (/ʃɪːv(eɪ)/; Namjjog: /sɪbʊ/), officially the Most Serene Republic of Shive, is the smallest nation on Kerbin by area. A city-state and republic, it is situated on East Kolus along the Western Norian Steppe by the Sea of Aontas bordering Viskaria to the west and south, with Neo-Mechani and Azuria to its immediate north. The majority spoken language is Namjjog. The country's territory comprises of the Walled City of Shive and the entirety of the Shiven Isthmus, adjacent to the Huncheon Lake System.

Inhabited by early Koloan Kerbals since at least 100 CE, its proximity to the sea and access to fresh water has permitted its continued inhabitancy by the late Root-Burric peoples and the modern Samagi.

As a city, Shive's trade and extensive naval history through the Sea of Aontas has influenced its maritime culture.

Shive is a developed country with emphasis on maritime commerce; its largest of two ports, Cape Kuju, produces most of Shive's income. Since the collapse of Mechani, Shive's economy has grown twelvefold, a phenomenon retroactively named the "Miracle of the Shive" following the establishment of a democratic institution.

Shive's neutrality policy has ended in recent years, with its admission in the Pan-Veiidic Commonwealth as a protectorate greatly improving relations between Shive and the Veiidic countries.

Etymology

The country of Shive is named after the Shive River, which makes up the southern border of Shive. However, the origin of the river's name remains unknown.

History

Prehistory

Shiven inhabitants have presumed to have practiced shamanistic rituals, with many communities bearing remnants of religious structures. Archaeological evidence has supported the idea that rituals of the like were conducted regularly and were often communal. These have been grouped into the Burric folk religion.

Samagi migration

The modern Samagi descend from the Mambic and Norian peoples; migrating across central Kolus over the course of four centuries. The Samagi ultimately trace their lineage from Root-Burric cultures, who were nomadic in nature due to the climate of the steppe. Their descendants, the Reposian, Mechani, and Aviennic cultures would become sedentary as they settled near the coast.

Feudal dynasties

The Western Norian Steppe would be home to many civilizations. One of the first major dynasties was the Old Mechani. According to tradition, the city of Mecan (presumed to be east of modern day Orisse) was founded by an archer of the same name in the 5th century. Shive was the southernmost of the Mechani's possessions. At the time, it is estimated it had a population of around 12,000.

From the 7th century onwards, the Mechani developed a policy of isolationism, making modern accounts unreliable. The Mechani's rule ended somewhere in the 9th century, with the Avienne shattered into city-states and minor feudal states, such as Shive, which was conglomerated into Shokon.

Throughout the late 16th and 17th centuries, the spread of ideas and the pioneering of maritime travel permitted the spread of religion. Patrism made contact with various coastal towns along the Kolusian Sea. However, these populations have since decreased and have been concentrated in Shive following five centuries of persecution, seeing widespread adoption after the O Period.

The rise of Novenadian emigrés have led to a slight increase in the number of Reformed and Veiidic-Baskayan Patrists, comprising 0.6% and 0.2% of the population respectively.

Second to Patrism, the rest of the Shiven population identify as areligious.

Reposian folk religion maintains small communities in the western rural areas of Shive, comprising 2% of the population.
