===Prehistory=== |
===Prehistory=== |
| − | Kerbal inhabitance |
+ | Kerbal inhabitance in Kolus began relatively late: circa. 200 CE, after the Axial Age. Comprising of migrations from the Western Norian Steppe, the Root-Burric developed a sedentary and agrarian lifestyle, sustaining off a pescatarian diet of maize, shrimp, and Aontan and Kolusian fish. Early Shiven dwellings were composed of baked soil and later animal hide. The first extinctions in the area, most notably the Aontan decapods and the erasure of most species of maize have been attributed to Kerbal expansion. Nomadic in nature, the population gradually shifted east and became what would be the modern Samagi and later Aviennic, inhabiting Shive. |
| + | Shiven inhabitants have presumed to have practiced shamanistic rituals, with many communities bearing remnants of religious structures. Archaeological evidence has supported the idea that rituals of the like were conducted regularly and were often communal. These have been grouped into the Burric folk religion. |
| − | ===Samagi Feudalism=== |
| − | Across the Western Norian Steppe, many Samagi clans would roam the Shiven Isthmus. Clans often fought for control and the three major lakes in the Isthmus. The southern, less expansive tribes south of Shive would eventually found Henshi. |
| + | ==== Samagi migration ==== |
| − | Most of Shive would fall under the Choi dynasty in the late 15th century, imposing a loose system of feudalism across Shive and neighboring lands to the west. |
| + | The modern Samagi descend from the Mambic and Norian peoples; migrating across central Kolus over the course of four centuries. The Samagi ultimately trace their lineage from Root-Burric cultures, who were nomadic in nature due to the climate of the steppe. Their descendants, the Reposian, Mechani, and Aviennic cultures would become sedentary as they settled near the coast. |
| + | === Feudal dynasties === |
| − | The Choi Dynasty was built upon extensive diplomacy, and had no professional military force of its own. The Choi had a policy of subdividing military power among the hundreds of fiefs across the Western Norian Steppe, however, directly administered local harbors, forts, and military installations. |
| + | The Western Norian Steppe would be home to many civilizations. One of the first major dynasties was the Old Mechani. According to tradition, the city of Mecan (presumed to be east of modern day Orisse) was founded by an archer of the same name in the 5th century. However, the modern consensus was that Mecan became one of the first sedentary settlements west of the Mamb River Valley, and it gradually grew over the course of three hundred years. |
| + | Shive was the southernmost of the Mechani's possessions. At the time, it is estimated it had a population of around 12,000. |
| − | The Choi, although mostly isolationist, maintained relatively strong trade relations with Kafrica and the many nations along the Aontas. |
| + | From the 7th century onwards, the Mechani developed a policy of isolationism, making modern accounts unreliable. The Mechani's rule ended somewhere in the 9th century, with the Avienne shattered into city-states and minor feudal states, such as Shive, which was conglomerated into Shokon. |
| − | During the 1660's, the decreasing supply of spices from Kafrica led their quality to be put into question. Merchants were accused of mixing in sawdust and gravel into the spices. Tensions heightened with the burning of the Obelisk in 1669 by an organized group of rioters. In the following years, many trade partners with cut ties with Shive, with the Choi's diplomatic lifeline was severed. What remained was years of stagnation, with civil unrest growing in face of the monarchy's inaction to satisfy the Shiven people. |
| + | ===Early republics=== |
| + | Norian communities began trading again in the 10th century. The next few centuries would see the rise of maritime commerce in Shive. |
| + | Historically, maritime transportation was considered a form of art very sacred to Shive. The rule of the law was often inspired by its naval counterparts. |
| − | O Jun-yeo, a writer and educated military prodigy amassed a cult following through pseudo-religious preaching, citing divine righteousness for the expansion of the Samagi people. He raised a five hundred man militia by 1670, encouraging strikes amongst the Shiven work force. The Shiven authority was ineffective in quelling the rebellion, subsequently leading to the Choi fleeing to Henshi where they would continue to reign. |
| − | ===First Republic=== |
| − | O Jun-yeo's earlier writings of a Shiven republic would inspire the first consular republic of Shive, of which, O became consul for life after a unanimous vote from newly found Shiven Senate, composed of former members of the Imperial Court. |
| − | |||
| − | The first republic was not a centralized government, with no written law. This meant that flotillas had their own rules and operated differently based on the beliefs of their captains. |
==== Piracy ==== |
==== Piracy ==== |
| + | The Kolusian and Aontan Seas historically saw a great increase in the movement of goods from the 14th century onwards; |
| − | Under O, Shive saw a dramatic increase in naval production, constructing a fleet heavily based on Kafrican designs. Feudalism was effectively brought to an end with O enforcing absolute control over Shive. While initially constructing merchant ships, the production of ships of the line would begin to enforce Shiven naval supremacy over reluctant merchants, later turning Shive into a sea-faring pirate republic. |
| + | |
| + | ====Decline==== |
| − | O personally headed the fleet, orchestrating the first Fire of Henshi (1691), the Sack of Moravi in 1692, the second Fire of Henshi (1694) ending Choi rule, and the twin Battles of Cath and Piast in 1699 in modern-day Tekkia. By 1700, the combined Shiven flotillas would amass forty victories in the Aontas. |
| + | ====Fall of Shive==== |
| − | Although Shiven captains urged boarding parties to respect the rules of war, in practice, this was often ignored. Impressment was a common practice within the Shiven sailors, and on most ships, it is estimated that two fifths of all occupants were foreign born, most originating from Kafrica and Eastern Aontas. |
| + | =====Siege===== |
| − | The fleet established many colonies throughout the Aontas, pioneering naval exploration after making first contact with tribes in Veiid. The pirates transported ideas and people, including Patrism and its first missionaries, who spread the faith throughout the Aontas, leading to the first Patrist monastery in Shive. O endorsed Patrism, not out of belief, but for a more centralized and politically backed religion to further unite the Samagi, as opposed to the widely varying loosely related folk religion in the Western Norian Steppe. |
| + | ===Mechani annexation=== |
| − | O was killed on June 2, 1707 during the Siege of Bá in modern day Solaria when his ship, the I Taek-so, ran aground and was hit in the magazine by Kafrican coastal batteries, obliterating the hull and sinking two nearby gunboats. The fleet would subsequently leave the city, and the nation would fall into disarray. O was posthumously revered as a savior; his legacy being one of legend, with his birth and death later becoming a major holiday in Shive. |

Captain of the People, Ji Heun-ge, would rally the Shiven Senate into the unification of Shive, Henshi, and Shokon into the foundation of a second, strictly consular republican government. |

Shive (/ʃiːv(eɪ)/; Namjjog: /sɪbʊ/), officially the Most Serene Republic of Shive, is the smallest nation on Kerbin by area. A city-state and republic, it is situated on East Kolus along the Western Norian Steppe by the Sea of Aontas bordering Viskaria to the west and south, with Neo-Mechani and Azuria to its immediate north. The majority spoken language is Namjjog. The country's territory comprises of the Walled City of Shive and the entirety of the Shiven Isthmus, adjacent to the Huncheon Lake System.
Inhabited by early Koloan Kerbals since at least 100 CE, its proximity to the sea and access to fresh water has permitted its continued inhabitancy by the late Root-Burric peoples and the modern Samagi.
As a city, Shive's trade and extensive naval history through the Sea of Aontas has influenced its maritime culture.
Shive is a developed country with emphasis on maritime commerce; its largest of two ports, Cape Kuju, produces most of Shive's income. Since the collapse of Mechani, Shive's economy has grown twelvefold, a phenomenon retroactively named the "Miracle of the Shive" following the establishment of a democratic institution.
Shive's neutrality policy has ended in recent years, with its admission in the Pan-Veiidic Commonwealth as a protectorate greatly improving relations between Shive and the Veiidic countries.
Etymology
The country of Shive is named after the Shive River, which makes up the southern border of Shive. However, the origin of the river's name remains unknown.
History
Prehistory
Kerbal inhabitance in Kolus began relatively late: circa.
Shiven inhabitants have presumed to have practiced shamanistic rituals, with many communities bearing remnants of religious structures. Archaeological evidence has supported the idea that rituals of the like were conducted regularly and were often communal. These have been grouped into the Burric folk religion.
Samagi migration
The modern Samagi descend from the Mambic and Norian peoples; migrating across central Kolus over the course of four centuries. The Samagi ultimately trace their lineage from Root-Burric cultures, who were nomadic in nature due to the climate of the steppe. Their descendants, the Reposian, Mechani, and Aviennic cultures would become sedentary as they settled near the coast.
Feudal dynasties
The Western Norian Steppe would be home to many civilizations.
