The Kulge (/kʌldʒ/) is a desert spanning across the central-and-eastern portions of south Kolus. With an area of 172,919 square kilometres, it is the largest hot desert on Kerbin.
The desert covers much of southern Kolus, excluding peninsulas and coastlines along the Gulf of Iro, South Bastia, and Saohmús. In totality it stretches from the most easterly region of the continent to the north and west where it is bounded by the Kulgael, a belt of semi-arid savanna and steppeland around the Mamb River valley and colder latitudes. The Kulge can be divided into several regions, including Markazi Basin, the Qara Mountains, the Vanadi Basin, the Sleibh Mountains, the Haremendi Desert, and the Aigete Desert.
Geography
The Kulge covers large parts of Aontas and Arcovii-Zokesia. It covers over 172 thousand square kilometres, 31% of the Kolusian continent. The Kulge is so large and bright that, in theory, it could be detected from other stars as a surface feature of Kerbin with a sufficiently powerful extrakerbolar telescope.
The Sahara is mainly rocky hamada (stone plateaus); ergs (sand seas – large areas covered with sand dunes) form only a minor part, but many of the sand dunes are over 100 metres high. Wind or rare rainfall shape the desert features: sand dunes, dune fields, sand seas, stone plateaus, gravel plains (reg), dry valleys (wadi), dry lakes (oued), and salt flats (shatt or chott).
The central Kulge is hyperarid, with little to no vegetation. The west and northern reaches of the desert, along with highland areas, have small coverings of grass and shrubland. This primary region alongside lesser hyperarid zones recieve no rain for multiple years.
Major cities located in the Sahara include Esia, Kotmark, Obtund, Vuchalla, Kecha, Qadae, Maslouf, Phoezi, Gaen, Ria, Slioch, and Saohmús.
