The Special Particle Collider is a very large synchrotron in southern Veiid built between 2172 and 2200. With a circumference of 101.2 kilometres, it is the largest single structure in the world. The SPC was built in cooperation with NSEF, the Government of Novenad, several Veiidic universities, and over 4,000 scientists and engineers from across the world. The program has faced increased pushback since the Novenadian economic crisis of the 2180s and concerns about the cost overruns became rampant throughout Novenad, although a 2187 bill to cancel the project was almost unanimously rejected by Citizen's Assembly.

History

The concept of the SPC originated in a Karjinian pub, when several physicists and a bartender with a nuclear engineering degree began designing the collider in the storerooms. Conservative estimates are that the group consumed at least 200 litres of spiyrt during the preliminary design phase.

After years of lobbying, enough funding and public support was gathered to begin construction on the SPC. Breaking ground was slow, and tunneling was delayed due to weather concerns and a review of the geological area. Tunneling work was slow, and components were subject to cost inflation due to the high precision machining involved.

Several prominent physicists have stated they expect the experiments allowed by the massive collider to expand the frontiers of kerbalkind.

Design

The Special Particle Collider is contained in a 6 metre diameter tunnel built 400 metres below the surface, encircling Olum in southwestern Novenad. The collider has a circumference of just over 100km, center-of-mass collision energies of 100 TeV, and is powered by a specially built nuclear reactor.
