Development

The introduction of the Raldev Class to Imperial Royal Navy service opened up a new way of thinking for the military planners in both the navy and the Ministry of Defence, especially regarding its approach in contested littoral areas. While the Raldevs were sufficient as a cost-efficient area-denial tool in small bodies of water, their slow speed and lack of other capabilities created a gaping vulnerability in roles. Recognising the deficiencies, VAE would upgrade scrapped designs for the Raldev program to create a high-speed multirole complementary design for the IRN.
