History

Belkan/Atreian Civil War

The AASC traces it's roots to the ending years of the Belkan (also known as the "Atreian") Civil War. As victory was all but assured for the Northern Royal Houses, the alliance (mostly Atreus) began looking to the future in securing its endeavors in the final frontier.

Taking many of the remaining resources from the previous Belkan Space Command, the Atreus Aerospace Command was officially established on November 19th, 2190 with its main objective being securing the future for Atreian interplanetary colonies as well as protecting colony ships.

Late 2190's/Early 2200's

However, in the modern age, the AASC's role has evolved into a interplanetary expeditionary force retaining the role of defending colonies. However, the AASC also acts as a quick response force to potential threats, anti-piracy, and conducting "amphibious" operations.

Organization

The AASC was originally under the command of the Department of the Air Force of Atreus. However, as the AASC grew, the Department of Aerospace was established in 2194 with the AASC ordering and producing their own Capital ships. Organized similar to existing Navies in nomenclature and combat operations, the AASC has 3 official fleets with a 4th planned. This includes the 1st Fleet, 2nd Fleet, and 3rd Fleet. The 1st and 3rd Fleets are both commanded by a Flag Officer ranking O-11 Fleet Admiral. The 2nd Fleet is the exception to this as it is commanded by a O-10 Admiral (this is due to the 2nd Fleet containing mainly support/logistical vessels).

Command Structure

The AASC falls under its own Department of Aerospace with Civilian Leadership in the form of the office of the Secretary of Aerospace, while Military leadership comes in the form of the Lord Admiral, a position picked by the ruling monarch of Atreus, and confirmed by the Atreian [INSERT NAME FOR CONGRESS/PARLIMENT HERE]. The Lord Admiral holds the rank of the same name, with their own pay grade of O-12. However during joint operations with other Pan-Veiidic Commonwealth forces, they have the authority of a equivalent OF-10.

Alongside the Secretary of Aerospace and the Lord Admiral, the AASC has its own advisory council in the form of the Admiralty. The AASC's Admiralty consists of 5 O-10 Admirals and a O-11 Fleet Admiral who serves as the Second-in-Command to the Lord Admiral.

Unit Organization

The AASC is organized similarly to pre-existing navies, but much lower crew compliments on ships, and a higher amount of "shore-based" rates and crew. The majority of the combat vessels of the AASC are based on operating inside Battlegroups, Task Forces, or Task Units subordinate to a primary Fleet commanded by a large Capital ship with ample Command-and-Control facilities.

Fleets

Fleets are the largest permanent formations of the AASC, centered around a Capital-scale Carrier for the case of combat fleets. These include the Retribution-Class Fleet Carrier and Trinity-Class Heavy Carrier or other Capital ships with ample Command-and-Control facilities (abbreviated "C2").

While capable of combat actions with the fleet combined in one formation, the AASC's Fleets are often used as a organization unit commanding subordinate Battlegroups, Task Forces, and Task Units.

AASC Fleets are numbered sequentially, starting with 1st Fleet and counting up.

Fleets are typically commanded by a O-10/O-11 (Admiral/Fleet Admiral).

Battlegroups

Battlegroups make up the largest task-organized/semi-permanent formation of the AASC, typically with 2-3 contained within a fleet. Battlegroups alongside Task Forces are the primary combat units subordinate to a Fleet.

Battlegroups are typically named instead of numbers, named by their commanding officers or superior officers as they are typically created and dissolved at the start and end of combat operations.

Despite this, "Battlegroup" can also be a term granted to a formation of multiple ships between different formations such as fleets or Task Forces, but also multiple Task Forces if need be.

Battlegroups are typically commanded by a O-8/O-9 (Rear Admiral/Vice Admiral).

Task Forces

Task Forces are the second largest permanent formations of the AASC behind fleets. However, unlike Battlegroups, Task Forces are almost always at least semi-permanent formations within fleets, but more often than not permanent formations within a fleet made up of multiple Battlegroups or Task Units within them.

Task Forces are numbered instead of named with a 2-digit code. The first digit of the code represents the fleet the Task Force belongs to, while the second is sequentially numbered based on the amount of Task Forces within a given fleet (EX: TF X1, TF X2, etc.)

Task Forces are typically commanded by a O-7/O-8 (Commodore/Rear Admiral).

Task Units

Task Units are the smallest permanent formations of the AASC. Typically centered around a heavier sub-capital vessel such as a Skyflash-Class Heavy Destroyer, a Siren-Cass Escort Carrier, or other light vessel. Task Units are the building blocks for Task Forces and Battlegroups, as their small size and small number of vessels gives some autonomy in their function and allow them to engage smaller hostile formations, or conduct independent operations away from a fleet with a established command structure.

Task Units are usually commanded by a O-6/O-7 (Captain/Commodore).

Operating Forces

There are 5 active Commands within the AASC:

  • AASC Navy Force Operations Command (NAVFOROPCOM)
  • AASC Navy Special Warfare Command (NAVSPECWARCOM/NAVSPECWAR)
  • AASC Navy Training, Evaluations, and Readiness Command (NAVTERCOM)
  • AASC Navy Logistics Command (NAVLOGCOM)
  • AASC Navy Network Command (NAVNETCOM)

Shore Establishments

The majority of AASC commands and establishments are located in the New Corvus colony in majority subterranean structures with limited surface presence in the form of NAS New Corvus, but even then mostly being underground.

The New Corvus complex contains the majority of the AASCs non-operating commands/forces, including:

  • Systems Development Command
  • Naval Intelligence Command
  • Naval Training and Evaluations Squadron 1 (NTES-1)
  • Naval Warfighting Center

The remaining commands and establishments are located on Kerbin, including:

  • AASC Space Observatory
  • Navy Personnel Command (Shared with the Atreian Navy)

Personnel

The AASC is the smallest of the branches of the Atreian Department of Defense, maintaining 3000 active personnel. Of the active personnel, 23.1% are Commissioned Officers, with 3.5% being Warrant Officers, the remaining 73.4% of AASC Sailors are Enlisted personnel. Not counted are the Cadets known as "Midshipmen" at the AASC Naval Academy at the New Corvus colony on the Mun.

Uniforms

The AASC shares it's dress uniforms with the Atreian Navy, as they both share similar culture, names, and doctrine. However, the AASC typically wears Dress Whites more often than any other dress uniform.

Ranks

Commissioned Officers

Commissioned Officers are sorted into three different classes of Officer. Flag Officers (O-7 to O-12), Command Grade Officers (O-4 to O-6), and Junior Grade Officers (O-1 to O-3). Flag Officers typically hold commands of Fleets, Task Forces, Task Units, or Battlegroups. Command Grade Officers most often command the AASCs Warships, as well as supporting vessels. O-5 Commanders typically command smaller escort ships such as Corvettes and Frigates, while O-6 Captains command larger capital and sub-capital ships including Battleships, Carriers, Cruisers, and Destroyers.

Enlisted

Enlisted personnel make up the bulk of the AASC's limited personnel, most often filling service and lower management roles. Enlisted personnel are divided into two categories: Non-Commissioned Officers (NCOs) from E-4 to E-9 and Crewmen from E-1 to E-3. Crewmen are entry roles within the AASC and are considered "apprentices" as they go through Basic Training and Technical Schools while learning their rates within the AASC.

Non-Commissioned Officers, or NCOs, are further divided into two divisions: Senior NCOs ranking E-7 through E-9 as well as Junior NCOs ranking E-4 through E-6. Junior NCOs begin to focus on leadership, managing small sections of Junior Enlisted personnel as well as continuing to work in their rates. Senior NCOs are almost completely focused within the AASC on Management and Leadership, managing larger sections and divisions of ships and acting as advisors to Officers. Senior NCOs contain various special assignments such as Command and Fleet NCOs. Command Petty Officers are the most senior advisors to the officers of ships and other small units such as Task Forces or Task Units. Fleet Petty Officers are much similar to the other Enlisted Advisors but are typically assigned to Fleets or Battlegroups.
