The Kroman Kingdom, also known as the Kroman Monarchy and the regal period of ancient Krome, was the earliest period of Kroman History when the city and its territory were ruled by kings. According to tradition the Kroman Kingdom began with the founding of the city in 735 BK, with settlements around the Teor River in South Comer, and ended with the overthrow of the kings and the establishment of the Republic c. 410 BK.

Little is certain about the kingdom's history as no records and few inscriptions from the time of the kings have survived. The accounts of this period were written during the Republic and the Empire are thought to be based on oral tradition.

Origin

The traditional version of Ancient Kroman history which has come down principally through Horner (76 or 72 BK - AK 19 or 12) recounts that a series of ten kings ruled the settlement in Krome's first centuries. The traditional chronology as codified by the ancient sources allows for 325 years for their combined reigns, an average of 32 years. Modern scholars has generally discounted this chronology, the Grestinians destroyed many of Krome's historical records when they sacked the city in 420 BK and what eventually remained fell prey to time or theft. With no contemporary records of the kingdom surviving, all accounts of the Kroman Kings must be carefully questioned.

Monarchy

The Kings following Koromi, the city's founder, were elected by the People, or Plebs, of the city, this created some wild scenarios and situations, which led to the overthrow of the Kingdom due to heavy mismanagement by the Kings and their senate who would be appointed unilaterally by the King, functioning more as a modern day cabinet ministry. A secondary factor in the mismanagement of public affairs was that public business could only be done on so called lucky days.

Chief Executive

The King was invested by the gods with supreme authority over the Kroman People through the use of Imperium, this was held for life and the king was protected from ever being brought before the legal system of Krome for his actions. The King was the absolute authority in the Kingdom with unchecked power over military and legal actions. There were no laws to keep the King from misusing Imperium, however he was still in practice subject to the Augury of Krome, as no public business could be performed without the consent of the gods.

Chief Priest

The Augury of Krome held supreme authority over the gods and its position was chosen within the Kroman Theocratic system, the process is lost to time, however we do know that the Chief Priest of Krome on many occasions would block public business through faking bad omens, an action which had many a Augur killed by the King.

Chief Judge

The King's power granted him the authority to arbitrarily declare guilt and punishment, however he could assign officials to act in his name, as Krome's population expanded, the King became too busy to sentence for crimes, and therefore appointed a Chief Judge to act in his name

Election of Kings

Whenever a King died, Krome entered an interregnum. Supreme power was transferred to the senate which was responsible for finding a new King, according to tradition, any Pleb of Krome could become a King, however in practice the Senate would elect one of their own to preserve their own power, as Senators could be dismissed by the King at any time, it was custom however for the entire Senate to be dismissed at the beginning of a new king's reign, only to be reappointed soon after ceremoniously.
