Design

The Swordsman-Class Missile Battleship is similar in design to the Hartfordia II-Class Heavy Cruiser, with the bow fitting the Mark IV Magnetic Accelerator Cannon as the primary kinetic weapon as a backup to the ships primary weapons, its missiles. In addition to its massive missile reserves, the Swordsman-Class also serves as a Flagship if needed (Mainly when operating without a Trinity or Retribution-Class in a group.)

Internal Structure

As a result of its shared development with the Hartfordia II-Class, both ships share a very similar internal structure, with fuel tanks and other systems acting as "Belt" armor behind the external ablative armor similar to Blue-Water battleships. Behind the external and belt armor, the Combat Information Center (CIC) is protected by a "Citadel" similar to the Hartfordia II in which more fuel tanks, structural elements, and reinforced armor panels to ensure the survival of her officers and crew above all else.

Amenities

The Swordsman-Class is renown for its quality of life features, high compared to the rest of the AASC's fleet, and luxurious compared to ships of other navies. Containing a small gym with cardio and strength training equipment to maintain muscle mass and endurance on long deployments.

Additionality to her public amenities for the crew, the Swordsman-Class also has the most bathrooms of the AASC as of 2200, with exception for AASC Retribution and AASC Relentless. The Swordsman-Class 8 Bathrooms overall (referred to as "Heads"), 2 reserved for officers and 1 head reserved for Senior Non-Commissioned Officers (SNCOs) she has 5 heads for the remaining 35 enlisted personnel. Every 7 enlisted personnel have their own head. These factors combined with the spacious living arrangements gave the Swordsman-Class the nickname of the "Armored Hotel."

Engineering Facilities

Due to her massive size, the Swordsman-Class has a large amount of internal volume dedicated to Damage Control (DC) facilities, and many more spaces for maintenance of missiles, sensors, propulsion, and any other facet of operations in space that need to be fixed.

Some of these facilities include 2 general engineering workshops, as well as 3 DC Lockers mounted near and along the spine of the vessel, providing rapid access to necessary damage control equipment, as well as redundancy in case of destruction of one or more lockers.

The distinct engine mounts at the rear of the vessel also act in support of the engineers, providing access to the internal mechanisms for the engines without requiring extra-vehicle activity (EVA) to fix any issues involving propulsion.

Weapons Systems

Due to her design as a Missile Battleship, the Swordsman-Class is built around employing Heavy Anti-Ship missiles such as the GM-03G "Tigerclaw" while the AASC developed its own Anti-Ship weapons. The Heavy Anti-Ship missiles are mounted in two banks, with one mounted on the ventral bow under the Mark IV Heavy MAC containing 6 missiles, and the remaining 6 missiles mounted dorsally amidships.

36 Medium Missile Cells are also mounted on the Swordsman-Class, with 8 of them being mounted dorsally just in front of the Heavy Anti-Ship missile cells, with12 other cells mounted ventrally directly under. The majority of the medium missile compliment are mounted in two rows ventrally amidships, with 11 missile cells in two rows for a total of 22 cells, bringing the total to 40.

Sensors and Self-Defense Systems

Much of the sensor suite and Self-Defense systems were taken from the Trinity-Class Heavy Carrier, including the M4435 Narrow-Band Scanner with Data-link capabilities, typical for the majority of AASC vessels. Similar to ships of her size, Space Defense Operations are overseen by the Space Defense Officer (SDO) ranking Lieutenant (O-3) but is carried out and executed by the GM-04 "Fury" Space Defense Missile, and AN/SLX-15 "Harpy" Automatic Missile Identification and Interception System (AMIIS).

Development

Initial Development

Originally based off of the Hartfordia II-Class Heavy Cruiser, both the Swordsman and Hartfordia II were designed around the same time by Odyssey Aerospace. Originally, both ships started under the Next Generation Battle Line Ship (NGBLS) program as the same vessel as the future of the AASC's Non-Carrier Capital ship.

AASC Redesign

Eager to arm the Atreus Aerospace Command with a Battlecruiser-sized capital ship to accompany the Trinity and Retribution-Class Carriers while being able to engage hostile Second and Third Echelon assets, Odyssey offered the product of the NGBLS program to the AASC in 2195. The primary selling point that Odyssey offered to the AASC was mainly to engage ships in the place of carriers, such as the Sirius-Class and Tekkian Capital ships without risking carrier aircraft if the ship was damaged or destroyed.

At the time, lacking a heavy orbital combatant, the AASC was interested in the design originally for both its Capital Ship contract, and its still pending Heavy Cruiser contract. However, due to different needs from the AASC, Odyssey's design was divided into two separate classes, one focused on being versatile to support both Task Forces and Task Units effectively with the Hartfordia II emerging as the AASC's new Heavy Cruiser. While the other was focused on Capital-on-Capital combat and as a Flagship, with the Swordsman-Class entering service as the AASC's first class of Missile Battleship.

Contract Awardment and Serial Production

After the redesign in 2195, Odyssey won both the Heavy Cruiser contract for the Hartfordia II-Class and the Capital Ship contract for the Swordsman-Class. Replacing the idea of 6 NGBLS ships, the AASC ordered four Hartfordia II-Class Heavy Cruisers and two Swordsman-Class Battleships in 2198. However, due to complications in securing shipyard space at New Comberth, the construction of the two Swordsman-Class Battleships were delayed, allowing the four Hartfordia II Heavy Cruisers to be built first. Following the completion of all four Heavy Cruisers in late 2197, the two Battleships, named Swordsman and Fatal Spell were laid down in January of 2198 and were fully commissioned in December of 2199, entering the fleet officially soon after.

Service History

Initial Service

Despite its large, sluggish hull during maneuvers, the Swordsman-Class was instantly loved by her crews, with its expansive Command and Control (C2) suites, Missile banks, and overall quality of life features. Being stationed on board of a Swordsman hull is considered a great honor in the AASC's ranks, and is one of the most coveted assignments personnel can be assigned to.

However, it was reported that additional to her slow responsiveness in turning and other maneuvers, the Swordsman-class has a relatively low acceleration compared to ships such as the Hartfordia II-Class at around 1.2 Thrust-to-Weight ratio (TWR) fully loaded, with the Hartfordia II-Class having around a 2+ TWR. However, this was to be expected due to her being over 500 tons fully loaded.
