Design

The Sentinel-Class Heavy Corvette is a unique design among the ranks of the AASC, including 2 large "wings" on either side of the main hull amidships, as most of the space in the main body is taken up by fuel, Command-and-Control (C2) facilities including the Combat Information Center (CIC) and secondary compartments. These wings serve as crew quarters and extra storage space for the crew during long duration deployments, such as escort duties.

The most notable design feature of the Sentinel-Class is the partial twin-boom at the bow of the ship, connected by structural elements containing secondary systems, but contains mostly non-essential supplies, as well as the bottom section of the Mark I Magnetic Accelerator Cannon.

The top boom of the bow contains the upper and sections of the lower barrel and assembly of the Mark I MAC, along with the various capacitors and electronic equipment required for the function for the MAC. The lower boom of the bow contains various electronic support equipment, as well as sensors.

Development

With the introduction and success of the Raven-Class Heavy Frigate by Northwind Aerospace, the Atreus Aerospace Command (AASC) began looking for a complimentary frigate for the Raven-Class as a stop-gap for the numerous, albeit spread out Heavy Frigates, primarily in the protection against other Corvettes such as the Vega and Ketan Classes of Corvettes. The new Corvette would also be responsible for defending carriers and other capital ships in the AASC from hostile bombers and fighters, assisting as well as achieving Void Superiority alongside the AASC's own fighter craft.

Announcing their availability for bids for a new Corvette in 2192, the AASC received multiple offers from Northwind and other fledgling Aerospace companies, looking to get their foot in the door for larger AASC contracts in the future. However, many of the designs did not meet the requirements set out by the AASC, or were too expensive and impractical for mass production.

Submitting their design in early 2193, Northwind built the majority of their design on a multi-role format, with various compartments being able to achieve different mission objectives. However, quickly after submitting their bid, the AASC partially redesigned the Sentinel, stripping most of the modular aspects, and focusing on the optional capacity for a Marine Fireteam if required.

Service History

Upon their completion and commissioning in 2194, the Corvettes were received with mixed emotions, with many crews praising the extra storage space, while complaining about the limited range, cramped engineering spaces, and small living compartments.

Despite their complaints, the AASC failed to address any of these issues, due to that these issues were a fact of the design, and part of the nature of a Corvette design.
