"The Harn (Harnburger) is a fat." - Noted Sahren Zoologist Blin Kyrt.
The Harn, also known as the Harnburger, is thought to have originated from the ancient Hurnok, a now extinct genus of wild animal originating in Doren.
Biology
Lifespan
Harns live for roughly 15-20 years depending on breed, though some breeds have been verified to live as long as 30.
Anatomy
Harns are incredibly dense animals, packed full fat and muscle, often weighing in at an incredible 3/4-tonne (750kg) or more.
Skeletal system
Hooves
Harns have large, soft hooves with a large surface area.
Unlike Capals, Harn Hooves are much more soft and wear down easily - as a result, farmer often make use of shoes in dangerous areas, but the hooves do not require trimming.
Teeth
As grazing Herbivores, Harns have much softer, wider teeth except for the incisors. Though Harns can be fed fruit, and their teeth can chew through most, this is recommended against by most zoologists due to the Harn's digestive system. Most breeds to harn have two pairs of 14 teeth, with four incisors for cutting grass, and the rest of the teeth are molars and premolars.
Some breeds of Harn only have 10 teeth with only molars and two incisors.
Digestion
Harn have three stomachs, one for digesting coarse grains and grasses, and the other two, including intestines, process the remains.
Harns have a hard time digesting high-sugar content, especially fruit, and will often get sick, starting with a bloating in the midsection, and in extreme cases, a type of proto-diabetes due to an inability to properly process the excess sugar.
Senses
"Harns are stupid and blind creatures that often trample small kerbal children by accident." - Blin Kyrt
Harns are often derided as nonsensical, dangerous creatures. Many Zoologists such as famous Sahren Capal Expert Blin Kyrt, who has a minor in Harn Studies from the prestigious online university, the Zokesian Online Order (ZOO), has completed over 50 peer-reviewed, double blind studies showing that Harns simply lack any decent sense in an animal. Despite this, Harns survive as domesticated animals due to their sheer bulk and inability to die unless killed.
Domestication
Breeds
Breed | Type/use | Notes |
---|---|---|
Dorenese Bolga | Meat / Dairy | Used more commonly for dairy than for meat, as it has a more gamey, tough texture despite domestic use. |
Viedic Harnstek Cowmal | Meat / Dairy / Pack Animal | Seen throughout Kerbin, almost as common as the Malk, but much larger, weighing on average 200kg more. |
Malk | Meat / Dairy | Multiple sub-varieties exist throughout Kerbin, the most common Harn breed. |
Weeb | Meat / Dairy | Bred EXCLUSIVELY in Crytil, export of live specimens is highly regulated and the meat is a Kerbin-wide delicacy. |
Kolusian Kerbin Karl | Meat / Dairy / Pack Animal | Known as the KKK throughout Kerbin. Seen mostly in Zokesian Farms. The famous Stahlseig mascot "Jimmy", who perished in 2140 during the defection to Surnay was a KKK-breed Harn. |
