The Phoenix-Class Guided Missile Cruiser is a class of Missile Cruisers developed by the Confederacy of Atreus and Tolburg Heavy Industries, and in use with the Atreian Navy and Confederate Navy. Designed as a capital ship focused on fleet-wide Air Defense, and Anti-Ship/Land Attack as a secondary role.
Design and Development
Born from the failures of the Belkan Navy during Operation Carolinas, the Phoenix-Class abandoned the larger naval guns favored by the Hartforida-Class Heavy Cruiser and the following Rison-Class Heavy Guided Missile Cruiser in exchange for more Vertical Launch System (VLS) cells. With the lessons learned from Carolinas and the loss of ZNS Kerffinger at the Battle of North Point the Atreian Admiralty focused on two areas of focus, being a strong Air and Missile-Defense suite to defend other capital ships, and the capability to strike both Sea and Land based targets, mainly to prevent Battleships such as the Morser-Class of Battleship. Originally fitted with the BGM-109 Tomahawk Land Attack Missile Block V, In 2194 all Atreian Phoenix-Class Cruisers were fitted with the 3M54-1 Kalibr Anti-Ship and Land Attack missiles.
Implemented and Proposed Refits
Due to the Mutli-Purpose nature of the Phoenix-Class Cruiser, various refits and design changes have been suggested to be implemented over its more than a quarter-century service life.
Advanced Warning Air Radar Equipment (AWARE) Package
The Advanced Warning Air Radar Equipment, or "AWARE" package was proposed shortly after the launch of the first four Phoenix-Class Cruisers in Late 2176. The main focus of the refit package was the implementation of new sensors and processing equipment to replace the already outdated SNOOP-6(V)2 Phased Array Radars it was originally equipped with. This included the SNOOP-7(V)3 Phased Array Radar, modern Data-Link, and implementation of a modified version of the AN/SLX-15 "Harpy" Automatic Missile Identification and Interception System (AMIIS) known as the AN/SLX-15N.
Officially approved by the Admiralty in 2177, the original four ships were refitted one-by-one to minimize any effect their absence would have from the Atreian Civil War. CG-03 was the first to be refit, relaunching in record time by the end of 2177, followed by CG-01, CG-02, and finally CG-04 finishing in 2179.
Service History
Atreian Civil War
Operation High Table
All of the original four Phoenix-Class Cruisers saw combat during the height of the Atreian Civil War, with CG-01 and CG-03 supporting efforts during Operation High Table, with both ships launching volleys of BGM-109s to destroy outposts along the NKR-Atreus border to great success. However the actions of CG-01 and CG-03 would not be enough as 6th Tank Army continued to advance north into Atreian territory, forcing the withdraw of Atreian forces from Servagrad and Ballingrad. But would not be the end of the actions of the Phoenix-Class during the Atreian Civil War.
Operation Preventative Maintenance
Due to limited resources of the Dremorian state, Battlecruisers DFS Servagrad and DFS Ballingrad remained in their home ports in the south of Dreimor. To prevent the repair of their damages during Operation Leviathan CG-01 and CG-02 were dispatched alongside ANS Tolburg and various escort ships to strike the port facilities housing the twin battlecruisers to delay, or entirely prevent the repair of both ships.
Emptying their entire Land Attack Missile reserves, the defenses guarding the Dremorian port were massively overwhelmed and a very little amount of missiles were successfully intercepted. 29 missiles made their mark and destroyed the majority of the port, and sunk DFS Ballingrad in port, and crippled DFS Servagrad, making the operation an overwhelming success.
Ships In Class
Despite ten Phoenix-Class Cruisers being produced, only four of them are in service with the Atreian Navy, with the other six being delivered to Zokesia in the late 2170's and early 2180's. The six Zokesian cruisers were delivered in two blocks, named Block A, and Block B. Functionally they are identical to those fielded with the Pan-Veiidic Commonwealth, only with slight changes to sensors and the removal of the AN/SLX-15N in exchange for the AN/SLX-15NE, the export version of the sensor array. However, upon delivery to Zokesia, all eight of the MK141 launch tubes for the RGM-84 Harpoon Anti-Ship Missile were removed, while the Atreian vessels retained them.
