The Skookum Class Submarine is a class of guided missile submarine currently in service with the Vocavian Navy and is manufactured by Teuthida Dynamics. The Skookum Class are presently the largest submarines ever built for the Vocavian Navy.
The Skookum Class was designed primarily for extended deterrent patrols and escorting missions. Each submarine possesses an enormous destructive potential, making it an effective deterrent against escalation and conflict.
Design
The Skookum Class utilises a sleek profile to accommodate it's primary armament of 10 RBS-15 cruise missiles. When stowed, the missiles are stored within the hull, but can be launched by opening hatches in the hull and raising the missiles vertically. In addition to missiles, it also carries 8 torpedoes, enabling it to escort other surface vessels and effectively serve as an attack submarine, engaging surface ships or other submarines. It's single M230 deck gun can be used when surfaced for attacking small surface ships, as well as for defence at close range.
Similar to the Thunderbird Class, the Skookum Class uses an electric engine to propel it through the water, though it is nuclear powered rather than using fuel cells. Using nuclear power affords it essentially infinite range, enabling it to patrol Kerbin indefinitely and independently, offering an enormous strategic advantage.
Service History
2080-Present
The first boat of the class, the VN 'Reticent Umbrage' was launched in 2030 alongside the Thunderbird Class, which it was intended to escort. It shadowed the VN 'Errant Herald' for the duration of its 75 day patrol, esnuring no enemy vessels came within range. After the 'Errant Herald' returned to port to be decommissioned, the 'Reticent Umbrage' remained at sea to guard Vocavium's eastern border whilst more boats of the class were launched. By 2083, 12 boats of the class were in service.
