Dorislav, officially the Dorislav People's Republic, is a nation in northeastern Doren. It is bordered by Opia to the west, Ulkova to the north, Zimor to the northeast, and the UIF to the south. Originally founded in 2086 as the First Dorislavian Republic, it existed from 2086 to 2089, when it, Nisoridav and Belasirov merged to form Belanirislav. Its second and third years of existence were marked by widespread violence and a brutal civil war between government forces and the Fasco–Dorislav Rebellion. In 2152, it was reestablished following a conflict that lasted from 2150 to 2152 and ended with the dissolution of Belanirislav and the subsequent collapse of Belasirov.

Etymology

The origin of its name is still a subject of debate to this day. Do- is believed to have originated from either *dolina (valley) or dorga (road). As the first syllable is do, the possibility of it being derived from the word droga in both modern and old Belarcovi - which also means road/path - has been largely ruled out. -ri- is presumed to have been a corruption of either Proto-Doreno *ryďь (ginger), *ryba (fish), or *rъžь (rye). What is widely accepted, however, is that the -slav portion of its name comes from *slava (glory).

Whatever its origins may be, the lands of northern modern-day Dorislav may have been the center of ginger farming in Belasria in prehistoric times.

Dorislav's terrain is mostly plains. Rimi Province is 90% mountainous terrain. The terrain in most of Zyey and part of Nadyaran Provinces is highlands, and as such they are sparsely populated compared to other provinces.

Dorislav is a unitary one-party state with a presidential-parliamentary system. Until 2159, the executive branch. consisting of President and Prime Minister. were elected by a majority in Parliament following an election, which occurred every 3 years.

Subdivisions

Dorislav is divided into the Republics of Nisoridav and Dorislav, which are in turn divided into provinces. Prior to 2169, there was an autonomous region for Zimori people in its northeastern coast before it was dissolved.

Foreign Relations

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs oversees Dorislavian foreign policy and is responsible for its diplomacy, bilateral, and multilateral relations affairs.

97.5% of Dorislav is ethnically Dorislavian or Nisoridavian and speaks Dorislavian or Nisoridavian as their first language. 2.5% of its population is Zimori, who are distant descendants of settlers, mostly Sovies, who emigrated from Sanctum to northeastern Doren in the 2070s.

Air

The Dorislavian Air Force is the aerial warfare branch of the Dorislavian Armed Forces. Its mission is to defend the airspace of Dorislav from hostile threats and provide air support for the Ground Forces. They operate mostly Z-80 Foxes purchased from Zokesia, comprised of 6 Z-80Es and 5 Z-80Ls.

The Dorislavian Ground Forces is the ground warfare branch of the Dorislavian Armed Forces. It operates LT-68s (in reserve), LT-37s, T-53s and T-76s. For troop transport, the BTR-47 or BTR-59 is used.

History

Prehistory

The lands that are now part of modern-day Dorislav and Nisoridav, per current archaeological evidence, are believed to have been inhabited by modern Kerbals for more than 20,000 years as of 2214.

Between c. 2900 BK and 2300 BK, Kerbals who presumably spoke proto-Tau would migrate into what is now part of Aenia, Amber, and Kanbek; the dialect which developed there is thought to have eventually evolved into the Doreno-Veiidi languages. Years later, it is thought that several groups of Kerbals migrated up north into the region of Belasria, now part of modern-day Dorislav and the Voley Union. Here, the form of Proto-Doreno spoken here diverged from what was spoken in the region of Ravninny south of Belasria. This dialect, referred to as North Proto-Doreno, eventually evolved into Belasirovian and Dorislavian. However, no written record of these languages would exist until the 12th century AD.

Modern-day Dorislav's land was ruled by Pandorica from 1950 to 1985. This predecessor later collapsed due to the Great Decline.

1986-2075

Between 1986 and 2075, there is not much recorded history about northern Doren. It is presumed that this was either due to a decline in literacy during the Great Decline or censorship in Dorislavian city-states, or a combination of the two. What is known was that the lands that soon became part of Dorislav were mostly ruled by self-governing city-states of varying ideology. Few of them ever considered forming a unified Dorislavian nation.

Bolkar: industrial heartland of Dorislav

Bolkar, while heavily dependent on trade from other states to produce industrial equipment, was one of the most important city-states here, as it was historically a major industrial center in Aecirov at the start of the Industrial Revolution and continued to play a role in the production of machinery, tools, and other goods during Pandorican rule. Throughout the Great Decline, it continued its role as an industrial center even as its factories operated at suboptimal rates or churned out equipment at a much lower quality than pre-Decline levels.

2075-2086

Zimori rule

The lands of what would become the First Dorislavian Republic were ruled by the Zimor Ascendancy from 2075 to 208?. The Ascendancy later collapsed mostly due to instability and ethnic tensions, most of which has been blamed on the alleged state-sanctioned persecution of Owlians and Dorislavians and the fact that the Greater Good Faith was the state religion.

2080s - Turbulent beginnings

To distinguish it from modern-day Dorislav, the term "First Dorislavian Republic" is used here.

Dorislav was founded in 2086 by Antonov Lobachevsky-Kerman. When Dorislav was founded, its territory only encompassed the northern half of its modern-day territory, the southern half belonged to Nisoridav back then.In 2087, due to a fascist upbringing driven by resentment towards the government and the belief the elections had been rigged against them after the Fasco-Dorislav Pact only managed to secure a single seat in Parliament, it became involved in a series of civil wars lasting from 2087 to 2088. By August 2087, the Fasco-Dorislav Rebellion had managed to capture nearly half of its territory back then, with the cities of Mer, Jaynudra, Prabis and Tysd under Fascist control. The city of Bresnt was also at risk of being encircled and overrun.

With backing from Owlia and the UCF, the First Dorislavian Republic was able to defeat the Fasco-Dorislav Rebellion, reclaiming all lost territory by June 2088.

2089 - Unification

In 2089, Belasirov, Nisoridav and Dorislav, through an agreement, merged to form the Federal Unified Republics of Belasirov, Dorislav, Belasrii and Nisoridav. Barely a year after unification, this merger state became involved in a brief conflict with Cenova after losing two football matches to the latter in 2090. Belanirislav won with 37 personnel killed and an unknown amount of casualties on the Cenovan side. Later, Cenova was banned from participating in international football events. The ban was later lifted, with Owlia banning Belanirislav from playing in the former's own football events for "this horrible act of poor sportsmanship".

2150-52 - Fall of Belanirislav and reformation

In 2150, due to tbd, Dorislavian nationalists staged an uprising that soon grew into a full-blown rebellion and spiraled out of control. In 2152, after 2 years of brutal fighting, they declared the reestablishment of Dorislav as an independent nation. Not long after, Belanirislav was dissolved, and its western neighbor, Belasirov, eventually collapsed as well.

2159 - Article 11

On November 10, 2159, newly elected President and Communist Party Member tbd activated Article 11 of the Dorislavian Constitution, the reason being to "ensure the safety and wellbeing of the Dorislavian people" and "safeguard them from the threat of right-wing extremism." Article 11's activation was immediately met with condemnation from not only its general populace, but also foreign officials, many of whom saw his decision as undemocratic and accused the President of trying to silence critics by branding them as far-right extremists.

Thousands of people, including university students, took to the streets to protest against the activation of Article 11 a few hours after it was activated, prompting the deployment of riot control units to try and contain the riots. Not long after, the Dorislavian Ground Forces stepped in to contain the situation, bringing with them a few dozen tanks and possibly up to a thousand soldiers. Military personnel, armed with Type 05 bolt-action rifles - which had been in service since 1905 with Aecirov and countless others in the Belasria region - were given blank and live ones; upon deployment, their rifles were loaded with only blanks, but they had been provided stripper clips with live rounds. They were only allowed to use live rounds should they be faced with rioters committing actions classified as "potentially fatal to others around them".

Tanks did not have their main guns loaded, but their coaxial machine guns were loaded with blank rounds, with additional magazines consisting of live or blank ammunition. To make it so that they could cycle normally when loaded with blanks, they had blank-firing adapters installed that were designed to be easily broken when using live rounds.

It is estimated that up to 11,739 people took part in the initial protests, with more than 1,051 injured, 104 killed, and 2,827 arrested. The majority of injuries and fatalities were from rubber bullets, blunt-force trauma resulting from baton hits by security forces, live rounds, or attempts to resist arrest. Crackdowns continued as further protests occurred over the course of three days, albeit on an increasingly smaller scale. Following 3 days of protests, several activists who played a role in leading the protests were arrested and given prison time for "hate speech" and "disturbing public order".

2160s - Authoritarianism

In Dorislav, the 2160s were marked by the implementation of several, increasingly harsher policies. These policies tightened regulations on media such as films, books and music, especially when it came to more sensitive or controversial matters such as politics, as well as the press themselves. Privately owned media networks were either nationalized or shut down and TV channels had their programming greatly altered.

The distribution of films, books, and music was also incredibly difficult to do so. These now required approval from the Ministry of Culture in order to be legally distributed. If censors did not like something else, they would order that the person or studio behind the work edit out "offensive content" and replace them with more acceptable content. Oftentimes, these changes delayed their release by months and sometimes up to a year, diminishing public anticipation over time.

Rise of the underground

It is also when the underground scene rose to prominence. While it had existed before Article 11's activation in late 2159, it was far smaller until after the events of 2159. Here, people who had gotten disillusioned with the government's authoritarian nature would willingly buy and sell copies of unapproved or banned foreign films, music, and books. Text publication was slow, as typewriters were usually the only devices available to the public capable of producing text on paper. Photocopiers and conventional printers were difficult to obtain: they required state approval to obtain or use and were programmed to print tracking dots onto paper when used to print something so authorities could trace the paper back to the printer used should the paper be seized by authorities, though the dots only became public knowledge in the 2190s. Some were able to bribe government employees into letting them use such devices for a few hours to produce their unapproved texts en masse.

While printer tracking dots only became public knowledge in Dorislav in the 2190s after a whistleblower leaked details about such functions on a laser printer, parts of the underground resorted to typewriting, following theories that printers and photocopiers could imprint information invisible to the unaided eye which allowed authorities to easily find the source of these texts and raid the source.

The underground scene continues to thrive in Dorislav as of 2214, despite countless crackdowns conducted by authorities. In fact, it is thought that up to 17% of convictions in Dorislav have something to do with "the distribution and consumption of contraband media". Underground groups strongly avoid uploading their works online to make it difficult for authorities to trace them; access to the Kerbnet is heavily regulated in Dorislav.

Its future is uncertain and Dorislav is still quite authoritarian in nature. It has had a history of consistently placing low in various freedom indices since 2160. Even before its transition to communism in 2159, it already had a moderate to low placement in the late 2080s and the 2150s.

• Belasirov and Dorislav Civil Wars: The Dorislavian Civil War (2087-2088) took place in Dorislav. Fought primarily between fascists and government forces, the BSBD was also involved to a limited extent.
• Belanirislavian Civil War (2150-2152): An uprising which ultimately led to this conflict took place here, as well as the downfall of Belanirislav.
• 2159 Article 11 protests (2159): A series of protests in Dorislav caused by the activation of Article 11 by newly elected President and Communist Party of Dorislav member [tbd], which suspended all civil liberties guaranteed by the Dorislavian Constitution.
