The F-0 Avalon or F-Zero Avalon, depending on styling, is a Twin-Engine Air Superiority Fighter developed by LAC between 2180 and 2198 in order to replace the aging Type 11 Invicta in the Royal Zalkentian Air Corps.

Development

The development of the F-0 Avalon began in the year 2180, one year after the Type 11 began production. Internally designated as the Type-0, this aircraft was slated to be the replacement for the Type 11, which was already deemed to be fairly obsolete due to its cost to procure and operate. Along with replacing the Type-11, this was intended to be a revival of LAC as a whole. That is why it garnered the designation Type-0, as it was a reset for the company, a start from zero. Prototype Unit 00 was completed late into 2184 and began flight testing just as Unit 01 was being completed in early 2185. However, this was in the midst of the Northern Crisis, where Zalkent was expanding into some of the territories to the north. The two prototypes were quickly outfitted with weaponry and sent into battle, with the engineers planning to collect valuable data on the airframes due to being in a combat scenario. These two aircraft were often seen as enigmas, even within the RZAC. During an intense dogfight, Unit 01 had its right wing blown off by enemy fire and crashed shortly after. With the pilot surviving and the airframe mangled, development was put on hold due to the loss of Unit 01. After the Northern Crisis, Unit 01's airframe was scavenged and rebuilt, being painted with a red right wing as a symbol of the incident.

With the introduction of the Air Superiority Fighter for the New Century (ASFNC) program by the Zalkentian government during the year 2195, development restarted again. This program called for a new, non-stealth Twin-Engine Air Superiority Fighter that would begin production in the year 2200. LAC brought the blueprints of the Avalon back out and pulled the two prototype airframes out of storage in order to begin modernization and retesting of the design. The Avalon also competed against a Mid-Life Upgrade for the Type-11, and later won out due to its lower cost and remarkably similar performance. Development finally finished in the year 2198, where production began two years later.

Variants

  • XF-0/Type 0 Prototype
    • Two units were produced, Unit 00 and Unit 01. Unit 00 had a conventional gray color scheme, while Unit 01 had a unique white and black color scheme with a red right wing.
    • Prototype units were initially mounted with a Chemical Laser that was later removed from production models.
